The Challenge
The IEEE VR 2026 3DUI Contest sets out to revolutionize remote communication by transcending the limitations of static 2D slide decks. The challenge is to engineer a next-generation Extended Reality (XR) presentation system that leverages multisensory feedback to drive engagement without sacrificing technical novelty or user well-being.
The Solution
We developed a Unity-based demonstration that places the user in the role of an instructor presenting on solar sunspots. We chose the solar system as our setting to leverage its vast scale, demonstrating the distinct advantages that presenting in an immersive medium has when scaling and exploring different perspectives.
The demo introduces a simple custom toolkit designed to replicate traditional 2D slide deck features within a 3D space. Such features as highlighting, drawing, and speaker notes to name a few. Additionally by reimagining slides as spatial 'containers,' we were able to guide user mobility and scale, balancing a structured presentation with an open, exploratory experience.
The Result
The core of our submission is a 15-minute standalone demo compatible with any OpenXR headset, supported by a 5-minute video showcase and poster. Additionally, we are currently finalizing a two-page extended abstract detailing our solution for the IEEE VR Conference proceedings. If selected, this project will provide the opportunity to attend the conference in South Korea and connect with the wider XR development community.
